Clay and Cowbells: Ryan is proof that joy, purpose, and a great hug can show up in the most unexpected ways.
He’s a mascot hugger, Three Stooges super fan, and the artist who turned a career detour into something beautiful.
When COVID-19 shut down his janitorial job, Ryan took a leap into something new: clay. At Sunshine Studios, he found more than just a job—he found calm, creativity, and connection. For nearly three years, he’s poured heart into every piece he makes—especially his favorite, a hand-built succulent house for his mom.
Outside the studio, Ryan brings the same warmth to everyday life. He lives in South Toledo with his two rescue dogs, Bruno and Tito, and recently welcomed a black-and-white cat named Sylvester. He enjoys simple routines, like planning meals, navigating grocery aisles with care, and checking off the list with precision.
He’s a fan of mellow music and ‘80s icons like Culture Club, New Kids on the Block, and Madonna. And when it comes to comedy, nothing beats the timeless slapstick of The Three Stooges. Sports? Not his thing. But mascots? That’s where he lights up. As a proud “mascot hugger,” Ryan rings his cowbell at Toledo Walleye games just to find Spike and Catrick—and give them a big embrace.
“Hugs relieve stress for both of us,” he says with a grin.
Ryan shows us that purpose doesn’t have to be big or loud—it can be simple, heartfelt, and quietly powerful.
